Description
Breguet is one of horology's elite names, and deservedly so. Breguet specializes in complicated watches with manufacture movements. This Breguet Marine Chronograph, for example, features an automatic winding column wheel chronograph caliber. Most brands don't even offer a lady's size chronograph, and when they do, it is invariably a quartz movement. Breguet pulled out all the stops, and developed this advanced movement, knowing it would be produced only in small series. (Small series production of a watch movement raises the cost of each caliber exponentially, because the R & D costs don't get amortized over many pieces). They had no choice: they are Breguet, and only a column wheel chronograph movement would ever see the inside of a Breguet chronograph -- even for ladies.
The Marine mode series is a sports watch, but don't let that deceive you into concluding the watch may not be elegant. The case features the classic Breguet channeling on its sides, along with a screw down crown, screw down caseback, sapphire crystal and screw secured strap. Watch is water resistant to 50 meters. The watch case is 18k yellow gold. Dimensions are 29mm diameter by 10mm thick.
Dial is silver with blued roman numerals and blued pomme style hands. The dial has brushed finishing whereever there is printing and guilloche on the other surfaces. Date window at 6 o'clock. The date window is bevelled, an indication of the high quality of the finishing.
Movement is the automatic winding Breguet Caliber 550 with 45 hour power reserve, 38 jewels, and a hand engraved 18k winding rotor. The entire caliber is hand assembled, hand finished and hand regulated. The column wheel construction is a throwback to the first chronograph calibers, which were produced for excellence (versus cost-effectiveness). The column wheel is designed for smooth switching on and off of the chronograph function, as well as to minimize friction in the caliber while the chronograph is switched on. Perhaps this is an unnecessary feature, but it is testament to Breguet's commitment to excellence.
Strap is a medium brown Breguet crocodile with 18k Breguet deployant clasp.
