Description
The movement inside this watch, the Patek Philippe Caliber 240 Q, has been discontinued after a 20+ year production run. This movement powers the reference 3940 perpetual calendar, which was produced in numbers much greater than this rarer reference 5040. The net result of this, is that the prices on the remaining new watches that house this caliber have been rapidly increasing.
In addition, this watch is extra-special because the person who orderred it from the factory requested the inclusion of a second dial - silver with Breguet numerals, which is included with the watch.
Writing about so many beautiful watches is no easy thing to do. It's not the writing part that is difficult; it's not giving into temptation to keep the watches! I see lots of great timepieces, and while many catch my eye, not many tempt me enough to actually put it into my collection. This Patek 5040 in platinum is just such a temptation.
While everything about this perpetual calendar is nice, for me the nicest aspect is the case. It's a perfectly proportioned, perfectly sized tonneau shape. Dimensions are 41mm long by 35mm wide by 8.5mm thick. It's an eminently wearable size, and fits easily under shirt cuffs. Sapphire crystal.
Caliber 240 Q with 22k mini-rotor for automatic winding; 27 jewels; 46 hour power reserve. Caliber has 275 individual parts and is stamped with the Geneva Seal.
The mounted dial is black with the following displays: day and 24 hour indicators at 9 o'clock; month and leap year indicator at 3 o'clock; moonphase and date indicators at 6 o'clock. Dial has applied arabic numerals and minute markers.
Strap is hand sewn black crocodile with platinum deployant clasp.
Watch is brand new with box and papers.
