Description
Patek Philippe holds the original Swiss patent for the annual calendar complication. Annual calendars are great – offering 99% of the functionality of a perpetual calendar at half the price. The reference 5135 is Pateks nicest annual calendar as well. Too bad it has been discontinued because it’s a really nice wristwatch.
When introduced, the 5135 made it clear that Patek wanted to do something fresh with the Gondolo line, and they succeeded. Not only is the tonneau case a first for an annual calendar, but the day, date and month windows are all arranged in an arc around the top of the dial, giving this complicated Patek a unique look. This watch wears larger than its dimensions suggest. In my opinion, this was the first in the series of new Patek designs targetting younger customers. This is definitely not a conservatively styled watch - it's bold and exciting.
Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 324 S with 34 jewels and a 45 hour power reserve. The Geneva Seal is stamped on the movement, made visible by the sapphire display back.
Dial is a very nice extremely light silver color (it looks white in indirect light) with the inner-ring featuring concentric guilloche; applied hour markers and "3" and "9"; beginning from the calendar window near 10 o'clock is the day, date at 12 o'clock, and month near 2 o'clock. Moonphase at 6 o'clock, and there is a 24 hour indicator hand revolving around the moonphase dial. Center sweep seconds and white gold dauphine hands. Winner!
Case is 18k white gold, in a hybrid cushion-tonneau shape, with dimensions: 40mm long, by 38mm wide, by 12mm thick (lugs and crown not included). With the extended lugs, this watch wears large. Water resistant to 25 meters.
Strap is brown Patek Philippe alligator with an 18k white gold Patek tang buckle.
Watch is indiscernible from new with box and papers. The 5135 is discontinued and is a hot Patek collectable.
