Description
The Rolex Submariner traces its proud heritage back to illustrious models like the reference 6204, the 6538 (aka Big Crown and "James Bond" model), the 5508 and the 5513. What they all had in common, besides being bonafide dive watches which looked very handsome, was that they did not have a date display. As the years went by, the Submariner crossed over to the masses, many of whom needed a date display on their watches. The original Submariner "look" was partially diluted (pun intended) in the name of necessity. Not so this Submariner reference 14060M, which harkens back to the earliest Submariner models.
The case is 40mm in diameter with a sapphire crystal and screw down crown. Case is water resistant to 1000 feet or 300 meters. Bezel turns counter-clockwise only and serves as a dive (or anything else) timer counting up to 60 minutes of elapsed time.
Dial is glossy black with applied luminous hour markers and hands. Note that this is the discontinued dial with only two lines of text under the center pinion, which is much nicer looking than the current dial with its encyclopedia of information printed on it. Don't get me started… have you seen the new Sea-Dweller Deep Sea's dial? There's enough text on that thing that you can't even make out the time.
Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 3130 with 31 jewels. The movement was meaningfully upgraded in the early 2000s (and the watch's reference number changed from 14060 to 14060M) with the addition of a new balance bridge (versus less stable balance cock) and some other technical improvements.
Bracelet is the stainless steel Rolex Oyster with 12 links.
US Retail is $5450. Watch is from 'Z' series production and is brand new with box and papers and with the Rolex warranty in force until mid December 2009. This watch could very well be one of the last 14060Ms made with the older style dial.
