Description

This Vacheron Constantin chronograph, ref. 4178, from circa 1942, is considered by many as one of the most beautiful chronographs ever made.

The hallmark design of this watch by the oldest manufacture in the world, is well recognized by the overall shape of the case, which features the unmistakable teardrop shaped lugs.

What makes this particular version of the ref 4178 especially desirable, however, is the fact, that it is crafted in solid18k rose gold and features the spectacular, and original two-tone rose gold gilt dial, with applied round pink gold indexes and roman numerals at the 12-and 6 o’clock position. In addition, a minute and 1/5th second track are present, as well as subsidiary and 30-minute register dials, all surrounded by the outermost radial tachometer scale.

Yet, the appearance of this dial is uncluttered and fascinating at the same time, due to the interplay between the alternating two-tone finish of the dial applications.
The original baton hands are blued steel, which, against the rose color of the dial, are a perfect harmonious match!

The 3-piece 18k pink gold case measures 35mm in diameter, and features a stepped snap-caseback, and the forementioned sculpted teardrop shaped lugs, which are spaced 17.5 mm apart from each other. The chronograph pushers are square, giving the profile of this watch a sleeker, more elegant appearance.

The 19 jewel manual wind caliber 434, 13”’, is rhodium plated, with fausses cotes decoration, straight line lever escapement, beryllium balance with timing screw, shock absorber, self-compensating Breguet balance spring and index regulator.
It is in beautiful condition and in good running order.

This amazingly beautiful and rare chronograph, with the spectacular original 2-tone rose gold dial, is in overall mint+ condition, and will be delivered on a signed and hand sewn black Vacheron Constantin crocodile strap.
