Description
"To be worthy of starting your own tradition, this watch can never be made again. The dies for its manufacture have been destroyed." So declares Patek Philippe, and no doubt this is partly why the reference 5500 Pagoda has appreciated in value since the day it was introduced in 1997 (think of it as an "IPO" with staying power).

In fact, the Patek Philippe Reference 5500 Pagoda was created to commemorate the 1997 inauguration of Patek's new manufacturing center in Plan les Ouates in Geneva, Switzerland. Inspired by a rare 1940s model, Patek made only 1100 of this 1997 edition in 18k yellow gold. Not surprisingly, the Pagoda is a very collectable Patek and unique in the brand’s modern lineup.

Movement is the shaped, manual winding Patek Philippe Caliber 215PS with 18 jewels, power reserve of approximately 43 hours and stamped with the ultra-prestigious Geneva Seal.

Case is generally rectangular, but with slopes and curves. The case sides are flared, and the sides of the case taper from bottom to top. Looking at the watch from the side, the appearance is arched. The lugs terminate in squares. This is a complex case with plenty of style, and can easily be characterized as Art Deco. Case is 29mm wide by 41mm in length.

Caseback is inscribed "COMMEMORATION 1997" and "PAGODA". Once again, the case is 18k yellow gold as is the buckle.

Dial is gold with black "Feuille" style hands and roman numerals. Subsidiary seconds dial with rectangular seconds chapter.

The reference 5500 sold out immediately upon its introduction in 1997.
Watch is as new with box and papers, including the commemorative coin.
