Panerai collectors know that so called Pre-Vendome watches are extremely rare, valuable and collectable. Basically, the Pre-Vendome watches are where the action is for serious Panerai collectors.
Pre-Vendome means watches that were made between 1993, when Panerai wristwatches became commercially available and popular, and 1996/1997, when Panerai was acquired by the Cartier conglomerate (Vendome Group).
The Mare Nostrum is a 42mm stainless steel case two register chronograph. It was only made (as a Pre Vendome model – there are later production models too) with a charcoal grey dial and a tachymetric scale bezel with the letters “Km/h”.
Movement is the manual winding ETA 2801-2 fitted with a Dubois Depraz 3127 chronograph module. Panerai only produced 492 Mare Nostrum 5218-301/A watches.
This watch still has its original blue shark skin Panerai strap and the Pre Vendome “bottle opener” style clasp. Watch is in original, unpolished condition and all functions work perfectly. There are no box or papers included with this watch.
