Description
When this Record Split Second arrived at our office, everyone knew right away that I would fall in love with this watch; that is actually an understatement…I was completely blown away when I first saw this uber-rare timepiece.
There is not one aspect of this watch that is not unique, impressive or awe-inspiring.
Lets start with the most important aspect of this circa late 1930/ early 1940’s Rattrapante chronograph by Record; It is in all original and NEW condition, unworn, unpolished, unblemished and yes…untouched!!!
The oversized, sculpted steel case, measures a massive 28 mm x 13.5 mm, without the flat chronograph pushers or stepped dual-function crown, which engages the split-seconds time. The stunning case features deco-style stepped teardrop lugs which are oversized and measure 48 mm from lug to lug, which adds even more size to this otherwise massive watch.
Turning the watch over to its side, you’ll notice the curved design of the lugs, which beautifully connect with the brushed finish of the side of the case. In fact, the interplay of design features and combination of mirror- and brushed finishes on the case add another dimension of sophistication to this chronograph, which I have never seen on another watch to this extent!
The oversized two tone silver dial is mint and sateen finished, with blue outer tachymeter minute track, two engine-turned sub-registers at the 3- and 9 ‘o clock position, and gold painted stick and arabic markers and numerals.
But best of all, it it is complete with the original gold feuille leaf-shaped hands and black chronograph hands!
Turning the watch over to its back, you will be amazed by the factory-original satin brushed case back, with perfectly crisp engraved serial numbers, which resonate with perfect harmony against the the sculpted and mirror polished surrounding.
Opening the case leads to the biggest surprise: a signed 20 jewel movement, cal # 179, which we have never seen the likes of. The complex and unique construction of this movement is on par with some of the finest chronograph movements we have ever seen, regardless of manufacture or price. It is not a stretch to say that this caliber is built to the same quality as a comparable Patek Philippe movement.
In a collector’s world of caliber and mechanichal movement oriented chatter, it has become clear, that a scarce and clean movement is always considered the zenith of a time piece. Rarest, however, is not a term that one hears very often, especially with movement calibers, as even the most sought after chronograph movements can be located on the internet with a little bit of research. This movement, on the other hand, is, after putting our combined two cents together, the rarest we have ever encountered…phenomenal and beautiful!!!
This is truly a rare opportunity to add a very special watch to your collection, this one is for the ages and is good to go for round number two…and yes, everything works as it should.
