Description
Ah, the iconic Portuguese chronograph watch from IWC, more formally known as the International Watch Company from Schaffhausen. Ever since a Portuguese gentleman fatefully asked IWC to convert his pocket watch movement into a wristwatch, a request that they fulfilled, these oversized and elegant watches have come to be named the Portuguese. IWC has offered several interpretations of the Portuguese over the years, and this reference 3714-01 is my all time favorite watch from the good folks from Schaffhausen.
By the way, as a little nod to IWC, they keep spare parts for every watch they ever manufactured for 100 years after production of each reference ceases. Isn’t that amazing? And, for the trivia buffs, although IWC is a Swiss company that makes their watches entirely in Switzerland since the late nineteenth century, the firm was started by a gentleman from New England in pursuit of his dream of producing watches.
The case on this watch is stainless steel with dimensions of 41.1mm diameter by 13mm thick. The finishing on this watch case is just superlative. Featuring alternating brushed and mirror polished surfaces, this case is an subtle masterpiece. Chronograph pushers are round pump style. Crystal is domed sapphire. Solid steel caseback. Water resistant to 30 meters.
Movement is the automatic winding IWC Caliber 79240 with 25 jewels. The base caliber is a Valjoux 7750 integrated chronograph, which IWC modifies extensively. By the time they are finished with it, in my opinion, it qualifies as a manufacture movement.
Perhaps the only thing more exquisite about this watch than its case is its dial. Matte silver in finish and color, it also appears white from some angles. Embossed rose gold Arabic numerals and leaf style hands. Chronograph 30 minute totalizer subdial at 12 o’clock and constant seconds subdial above six o’clock. Note that both chronograph hands are blued while the timekeeping hands are rose gold. There is a minutes and seconds chapter on the case/dial flange.
Strap is black IWC crocodile with steel IWC tang buckle.
Watch is indiscernible from new and will be delivered with box and papers. US Retail price is $6800.
