Description
Here is a vintage Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 96 in 100% original condition, including the two-tone dial, which is signed “ASTRUA – TORINO”.
The Extract from the Archives, which is included with the watch, reveals that the movement was manufactured in 1922, encased in 1933, and then the watch was sold on August 27, 1934. How cool is that? Nothing is better than a fantastic, all original and interesting vintage watch with documented provenance.
Original case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 31mm diameter by 9.5mm thick. This case appears to never have been polished. The original finish is mirror polished on all of the top facing surfaces of the watch, brush finished on all of the side surfaces of the watch, with the case back being polished.
Original oversized 18k winding crown.
Original dial is two-tone with applied golden hour markers set into a grey color concentric ring, while the center and periphery of the dial are silvered. The subsidiary seconds dial is also grey, and has guilloche and a printed seconds chapter, with sector dial pattern (heavier hash marks at the cardinal points).
Original blued seconds hand. The main feuille style golden hands are also original. The dial is signed ASTRUA – TORINO which means it was retailed by the famous Italian jeweler Astrua in Turin, Italy (which Italians call, properly, Torino).
Original movement is the manual winding Caliber 12’’’ with 18 jewels, with 8 adjustments to heat, cold and isochronism. Movement is extremely clean and running well. This movement is laid out in a very interesting and visually pleasing way. Please feast your eyes on the pictures below.
Strap is modern hand sewn black crocodile Patek Philippe with gold plated Patek Philippe tang buckle.
There is a lot going on, on this 100% original and untouched watch. The movement, both its story and its aesthetic, are very cool. The richness of detail on the dial, original and unspoiled case condition, and the way cool movement, makes for a very compelling wristwatch.
