Description
The transitional Rolex sports watches are popular among collectors, and offer an interesting and important testament to Rolex’s commitment to constant improvement – a decidedly German trait for the Swiss watch King. The 16660, affectionately known as “the triple six”, was introduced in 1978 and marked the first time the SeaDweller had a sapphire crystal, a 4000 feet depth rating and a larger and improved helium release valve.

Significantly, this watch has the matte dial with no metal rings surrounding the hour markers – by far the most desirable dial for a 16660 SeaDweller. This dial really was a transitional one, with the older style hour markers from the 1665 SeaDweller but with the increased depth rating (from 2000 feet to 4000 feet). The majority of 16660 SeaDwellers have the gloss dial with hour markers surrounded by metal rings.

This watch is accompanied by its original box, papers and booklet. The watch was originally retailed on October 26, 1985.

The SeaDweller case is something to behold. All modern Rolex watches use the Oyster case – but really the other models should have their cases named “Oyster light” because the SeaDweller’s case is a behemoth in comparison. Stainless steel with dimensions of 40mm diameter by 15.5mm thick. Unlike other Oyster cases, the SeaDweller case has a helium release valve on the left case side, text on the case back, no Cyclops magnifier over the date and also the SeaDweller had solid end links for at least a decade before the Submariner finally got them. Lastly, the bracelet links are thicker than a Submariner’s links. If you ever need to have a watch that will really live up to ANYTHING, then a SeaDweller is your watch.

Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 3035 with 27 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer movement. Quick set date (first time on a SeaDweller).

Condition is mint. The original bezel insert has marks and the case back has a few marks but overall the case is mint and the dial is in perfect untouched condition. Bracelet is in mint plus condition.

This transitional SeaDweller with rare matte dial, is complete with box and papers (but no SeaDweller booklet), and is guaranteed 100% original and 100% nice.
