Description
Here is a vintage Rolex Submariner reference 5512 with original box, papers and Chronometer Certificate.
Original case is 40mm diameter by 14.2mm thick. Domed acrylic crystal has some marks. Original screw down crown operate perfectly. Diver’s timing bezel and insert are original. Rolex riveted Oyster bracelet with with 10 links and fold over clasp. Case is in excellent condition.
Collectors don’t ordinarily talk about “transitional” 5512 Subs, but this is such a transitional watch in my opinion. With serial number 1335XXX dating it to 1965, this watch has that period’s characteristic rounded crown guards, something between the earlier pointed crown guards and the later, normal style crown guards that typified the 1970s Submariner case. Also, the dial on this watch was the first Submariner to use the text “SUPERLATIVE CHRONOMETER OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED” which is in use to this day. Earlier dials said “OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER”.
The black dial has a combination of gilt print and white printing, which is correct for 1965. It also has the more desirable “meters first” depth rating. The luminous and hands have been re-lumed, but this gilt gloss transitional dial is otherwise in mint condition.
Movement is the automatically winding Rolex Caliber 1560 with 25 jewels and adjusted to temperature and 5 positions. The movement is immaculate and running well. Inside case back is dated III.65. Movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer, with paperwork included.
This is an interesting vintage 5512 Submariner for its transitional nature, its mint deep gloss gilt dial and its paperwork.
