Description
Here is a beautiful, all original Rolex reference 6542 GMT Master from 1958. The reference 6542 is the original GMT Master. The GMT was released for commercial sale in 1954. This particular watch still has its original Bakelite bezel insert, which is a genuine rarity given the fact that 99% of the original Bakelite bezel inserts have broken or been replaced in the intervening 50+ years. This watch also has its original dial and hands, all completely original.
Original stainless steel case measures 38.5mm in diameter by 13.3mm thick. The case is in outstanding condition, and still has its original beveled edges. Very clean and easily in mint plus condition. The original bezel turns with some resistance, and still has its original Bakelite blue and red bezel insert. The screw down crown operates as it should. The crystal is acrylic.
Original black dial features original luminous hour markers, which have mellowed to a uniform and beautiful patina, light hazing, original hands including the original red 24 hour hand with small arrow tip, gilt print, railtrack around the minute hash marks, and “roulette” two color (red and black numbers) date wheel with Cyclops lens.
Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 with 25 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. The movement is very cleaning and running strong. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.
The serial number of this GMT Master is 398XXX which dates production to 1958. The inside of the case back is engraved with the model number ‘6542’ along with the date code ‘III.58’ which shows that the assembled watch left the factory in the third quarter of 1958.
Bracelet is a riveted Rolex Oyster with 10 links.
It is very difficult to find an all original reference 6542 GMT Master, and the case on this watch is outstandingly clean and with its original case lines. This is a highly collectable GMT. |
