Description
The Rolex Submariner reference 1680 in 18k gold with 18k Rolex Oyster bracelet with the blue "nipple" dial is my favorite Rolex Sub of them all. This dial on this watch is turning from the original blue to purple, which is spectacularly nice looking.
This watch is just awesome. If you like gold, this trumps even a Rolex Day Date. The case is a massive 40mm in diameter and 14.5mm thick. The bracelet is a heavy link Rolex Oyster with 12 links.
Case number 5861XXX dates production to 1979. The case is in clean, mint condition with fat lugs of uniform width. The bezel is original and turning with just the right amount of resistance. The bezel insert has been replaced with a recent insert. The crystal is acrylic and is very clean, in perfect condition. The original gold Triplock crown is operating perfectly. The case lines are crisp and this case is mint to mint plus.
Dial is awesome! Untouched and 100% original. The purple color is gorgeous. The applied golden hour markers give the dial great depth. There is a small area from the 11 o’clock to the 12 o’clock positions, on the very edge of the dial, where the color is streaked gold. Also, around the center of the dial, there is some gold coming out in the purple. The original hands are in great condition. There is a date display at 3 o’clock.
Movement is the Rolex automatic winding Caliber 1570, one of the most accurate automatic movements ever built by any manufacture. Maintained properly, many caliber 1570s keep time to within 1 or 2 seconds per day after 20+ years. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. The movement has 26 jewels and is adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. The movement is as clean and shiny as the day it was completed by the watchmakers in the factory and is running great.
Bracelet is a solid 18k gold Rolex Oyster with 12 solid links. One of the links has been repaired, which can be seen in the picture below. The bracelet is in excellent to mint condition with no stretch.
