Description
Rolex made the reference 5513 Submariner for 28 years, which is an amazingly long time for a single reference number to be produced. So, it's hard to make the case that reference 5513 Submariners are rare... but it's easy to make the case that the 5513 is a darn nice watch, as evidenced not only by its long production period but also by the watch’s popularity in the collectors' market. And unlike many collectable watches, the 5513 is a beast, ready for whatever you can throw at it. It makes a fantastic daily wear watch, and given proper maintenance, I am convinced these watches will last 150 years.
Original case is stainless steel and measures 40mm diameter by 14.3mm thick. The crystal is acrylic and is domed, which gives the 5513 a unique profile in the Submariner range. It's an outstandingly handsome case. Bezel has a diver's count up scale on it, and it turns with the optimal amount of resistance. The screw down crown is operating just as it should. The case shows some wear, but is clean and mint. Serial number 5017XXX dates production to 1977.
Dial is black and 100% original and untouched, with the "660 ft = 200m" depth rating. The original hands along with the hour markers have a uniform light patina. The dial is in perfect condition.
Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1520 with 26 jewels. Rolex's Caliber 1520 is a true workhorse. Many of the 1520 outfitted watches that have been around 30+ years are still running spot on, even without a service. The movement in this watch is immaculate and running strong.
The watch is on a custom cuff style hand made black Shell Cordovan strap by Attila Aszodi Custom Designs. Shell Cordovan makes the perfect watch strap because unlike other leather straps, Shell Cordovan becomes softer and more comfortable with age and has an extremely long life, and is the most water resistant leather strap. Submariners look great on these straps, and we have added a vintage steel Rolex buckle to this one.
