Description
This watch is simply beautiful. F.P. Journe is the Breguet of our generation. This Souverain Tourbillon with Remontoir and Dead Seconds is a watch that both your heart and mind can fall in love with!

The solid platinum case is cleanly designed and free of design embellishments. While the fit and finish are flawless, Mr. Journe correctly decided to let the wearer/admirer focus on the watch's horological features and did not want the case to distract from the "message". The platinum case has dimensions of 40.5mm diameter by 10.5mm thick. Sapphire front and display back crystals.

Dial is a pane of solid 18k white gold with a dark silver finish. Note the patented and extremely attractive screwed on time, seconds and tourbillon ring. This approach of screwing these white gold elements to the dial introduces a wonderful depth to the dial. The tourbillon cut-out shows the one minute tourbillon in all of its deserved glory. The power reserve display, which measures up to the Caliber's 42 hour power reserve, perfectly balances the subsidiary seconds display which is located directly below it on the dial.

The manual winding F.P. Journe Caliber 1403 has 26 jewels, an 18k gold main backplate and a 42 hour power reserve. The real story of this Caliber, aside from the tourbillon (who has ever heard of a tourbillon mechanism where the tourbillon was not THE story?), is the remontoir and the dead seconds (Seconde Morte as it states on the dial). The remontoir is controlled by a spinning vane, which is powered every second by the mainspring, which provides a perfectly evened out power supply to the balance assembly. This is an esoteric and advanced system for optimizing the running rate of the movement and, theoretically in tandem with the one minute tourbillon, should provide as close to zero deviation and zero error timekeeping as possible from a mechanical movement.

The Dead Seconds is a philosophical device, in addition to being technically daunting, rare and impressive as hell. By philosophical, I mean it is a different idea of how to measure seconds: whereas normal mechanical movements have seconds displays which actually "micro-tick" the seconds in fractions, resulting in the famous "sweeping" motion of the seconds hand, a Dead Seconds second hand stops on each second until that second has elapsed, at which time it clicks to the next second. This permits a more precise reading of the time.

Strap is a black crocodile F.P. Journe strap with platinum Journe tang buckle. This watch is pre-owned but 100% unworn and consequently new condition, with box and papers. The US Retail Price is $148,000.

Owning a watch like this is a privilege afforded to very few collectors, since producing a watch like this requires a master to produce it.
