Description
This first series Rolex 6240 Daytona is the only known 6240 with a ‘Rolex Cosmograph Oyster’ (RCO) dial. The 100% original first series case on this 6240 has its fat first series pushers and is in mint+ condition. If you are a vintage Rolex collector, this watch is enough to give you heart palpitations. The dial, like the watch, is guaranteed 100% original and authentic—-AND ABSOLUTELY MINT+.
Original steel case measures 38mm in diameter by 14mm thick. The reference 6240 was the first Rolex Daytona to feature screw down pushers, and its production overlapped with the Daytonas of that period with the round pump style chronograph pushers. Accordingly, its production was very small. This is a first series production 6240 case, which is evidenced by the original first series fat chronograph pushers. Crystal is acrylic. Original screw down crown and chrono pushers all work perfectly. Chronograph hands reset crisply and accurately to their zero positions. The original bezel has sharp edges and the original Units per Hour scale runs from ‘50’ to ‘200’ and is very clean.
The dial is ultra rare and important. Collectors will immediately observe that unlike almost all other PN Oyster Daytonas which read “Rolex Oyster Cosmograph,” this dial reads “Rolex Cosmograph Oyster”--NEVER before seen on a reference 6240 Daytona. This black three color Paul Newman dial is original and untouched and in perfect condition. The step on the dial to the sunken subdials with their concentric guilloche and contrasting white color couldn’t be prettier to a collector’s eye. The original hands are all mint.
Original manual winding Rolex 722-1 Caliber has 17 jewels and is adjusted to three positions. This is a column wheel chronograph construction. Movement is clean and mint.
Bracelet is Rolex folded Oyster 7835 with 12 links and ‘271’ endlinks. Bracelet is mint with light to moderate stretch.
Serial number 1297XXX dates production to 1965. Watch will be delivered with its original Rolex box.
