Description
The reference 16800 Submariner is a so called “transitional” model, which introduced the sapphire crystal, 1000 foot depth rating, Caliber 3035 movement and quick set date. Within the reference 16800 there are two dial variants – glossy with hour markers surrounded by metal and the MUCH more desirable matte dial without the metal surrounds. This watch has the matte dial.
This vintage Rolex Submariner reference 16800 is in mint condition. The original dial is close to 100% condition save for a tiny mark at the 3 minute hash mark, and is beautiful.
Case is stainless steel with dimensions of 40mm diameter by 12.7mm thick. Sapphire crystal (first time on a Submariner). Water resistant to 300 meters / 1000 feet (first time on a Submariner). Original bezel and screw down Trip Lock crown both operating smoothly. The bezel “pearl” (the inlaid luminous dot) has a patina that matches the dial perfectly.
Serial number 7205XXX dates production to 1981.
Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 3035 with 27 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer movement. Quick set date (first time on a Submariner).
The dial on this watch is 100% original and untouched. Once again, this is the matte black dial with the older style hour markers (not surrounded by metal) and this was the LAST Submariner to offer this dial. The hour markers have a very pleasing and uniform patina.
Bracelet is the Rolex Oyster reference 78360 with ‘590’ end links and 11 links. Bracelet is in mint condition with zero stretch.
