Description
IWC has one of the richest histories of innovation in the watch business. The Pellaton winding system is one of their highpoints. This watch is ridiculously rare – the square stainless steel reference 1871 with the incredible Caliber 8541 movement beating inside.

First of all, the case is 100% original and never polished. It has some insignificant surface “noise” going on, but is near new old stock. Crystal is square acrylic. The bezel is brush finished and the top surfaces of the lugs are polished. The sides of the lugs are brush finished and the sides of the case are polished. The square case back is faceted and brush finished. The original IWC crown is signed with their fish logo, meaning the watch is water resistant, in this case to 30 meters. Dimensions are 34mm square by 11.2mm thick.

Dial is original and untouched. Silver color with brush finished innermost square area with applied “IWC” and granulated outer square border with applied silver hour markers. The hour markers have a black center channel. The date window is at 3 o’clock and overlaps both the brushed and granulated surfaces of the dial. Date wheel is grey and the numbers on it are white. Baton hands are original and resemble the hour markers in that they have a black center channel.

Movement is the IWC Caliber 8541 with Pellaton winding system, 25 jewels and beating at 19,800 beats per hour. I found the following features of this in-house movement on the Internet:

* Diameter of movement 28 mm (12½ '"),
* Height of movement 5.9 mm,
* Decoration "Geneva Bar" and perlage,
* 25 Rubies,
* Self-winding (IWC patent),
* 40 hour reserve when fully wound,
* Barrel material: anticorrodal,
* Mainspring, unbreakable, rustproof, antimagnetic (NIVAFLEX),
* Shock resistant automatic winding mechanism (IWC patent),
* Incabloc shock-absorbing system on the balance staff,
* Antimagnetic, self compensating Breguet overcoil balance spring (first quality NIVAROX),
* Extra-large beryllium balance, antimagnetic,
* Oscillation frequency of balance: 19,800,
* Eccentric drop adjustment,
* Precision adjustment regulators via cam on index tail and micro adjustment timing weights on balance arms,
* Manual setting and winding using the crown,
* Regulation of watches in various positions and temperatures, based on the most stringent individual checks.

Strap is new brown IWC crocodile with modern steel IWC buckle.

This watch was in the 1970 IWC Catalog. I can’t say for certain if it was offered except in 1970. If you are an IWC collector, don’t let this watch get past you!
