Description
Here is an all original vintage Rolex Explorer II with orange 24 hour hand. These watches have come to be known as “Steve McQueens”. This reference 1655 is the first Explorer II, and in the history of Rolex watches, this watch has a unique appearance. It was designed for cave dwellers who needed to discern between nighttime and daytime while in complete darkness deep inside a cave.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 14mm thick. Crystal is acrylic. Bezel features engraved 24 hour scale. Screw down crown. Case is in very good condition.
Original black dial with unique hour/minutes/seconds markings (unique to all other Rolex watches, not unique to other 1655s). Dial is in mint condition. Original hands in excellent condition. Date at 3 o’clock.
Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Movement is running strong. Inside case back notes services performed in 1986, 1994, 1999 and 2003.
Watch is on rustic tan suede leather strap with steel Rolex buckle.
