Description
The Ulysse Nardin Planetarium Copernicus was a really big deal when it debuted in the late 1990s. Ludwig Oechslin is the designer of the watch, and he is one of the living legends of our era, having collaborated with Ulysse Nardin for over a decade now. His ideas and designs have catapulted Ulysse Nardin to the highest realm of horology, and the Planetarium Copernicus is one of the watches that launched the firm’s ascension into the heavens.
The Planetarium Copernicus combines Ptolemy’s construct of a geocentric universe with Copernicus’s construct of a universe with the sun at its center (Heliocentric). The relative positions of the planets to the sun and the earth is displayed and the watch also provides a perpetual calendar displaying the months. The months display and sign of the Zodiac display complete a 360 degree rotation on the watch’s dial every 365.24 days.
The 18k rose gold case measures 39mm diameter by 13.5mm thick. Movement is an in-house Ulysse Nardin automatic winding caliber with richly decorated plates and rotor and with 42 hour power reserve. Lugs are hooded and hinged and each lug contains a white gold segment. This watch has the Ulysse Nardin model number 801-22.
Blue dial has numerous concentric plates that rotate, depicting the positions of “SATURNUS”, “JUPITER”, “VENUS”, “MERCURIUS” and “MARS” relative to Earth and the sun. The constellations are referenced on the gold chapter ring at the periphery of the dial.
Strap is a blue Patek Philippe crocodile with 18k rose gold Ulysse Nardin buckle.
Watch is near mint with Ulysse Nardin warranty card and other materials along with special Ulysse Nardin display box.
