Description
The “Paul Newman” Daytona is THE iconic vintage watch in my opinion. It just looks fantastic, which is at least a huge contributor to its all-star status. More importantly, there are simply not enough original Paul Newman Daytona watches to satisfy the demand for them.
Watch is accompanied by two letters from Rolex Geneva. The first, dated February 16, 1988 witnesses that the watch received a “Complete factory servicing”. Second letter is dated April 20, 1988 and is a receipt for a new bracelet (still on the watch). The service letter shows the watch’s serial number. These letters and the original box will be delivered with the watch.
It appears that this original case has never been polished. Surface metal shows wear, but much more importantly there is no metal erosion from polishing. Original screw down crown and round pump chronograph pushers all function perfectly and the chronograph hands reset crisply and accurately to their zero positions. Acrylic crystal. Original bezel retains its sharp edges and has a Units per Hour scale ranging from ‘50’ to ‘200’. Case measures 36mm diameter by 13mm thick.
Original untouched Paul Newman white three color dial with contrasting black subdials. Subdials are sunken and have concentric guilloche. The border at the edge of the dial is black with red minutes and 1/5 of a seconds chapter. The applied hour markers and adjacent luminous dots are also inside the black ring. Applied Rolex crown at 12 o’clock. “DAYTONA” is in red, arching over the lower chronograph 12 hour totalizer subdial. There is a small surface scratch below and to the right of the ‘H’ in Cosmograph. The dial is otherwise in mint condition. Original hands have light spotting at the ends.
Original movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 722 with 17 jewels and adjusted to three positions. This chronograph caliber features column wheel construction and is in clean shiny perfect condition.
Bracelet is Rolex Oyster in near mint condition, surface scuffing only and no stretch, with fold-over deployment clasp.
This is a fantastic, documented, and very handsome original Paul Newman Daytona with excellent investment potential.
