Description
Breguet is one of the Big Daddies in the Swiss watch world. It’s named after the all-time brightest mind in the history of horology, Abraham Louis Breguet. The Marine is Breguet’s sports model, and upon close inspection, or a glance of it on your arm, it’s obvious that it’s a really nice watch.
The edges of the Marine are its hallmark and the nicest aesthetic feature of the watch case: they have vertical channeling that goes in 360 degrees around the case (save for underneath the lugs). The steel bezel is broad and the crystals, front and display back, are sapphire. Lugs are long and the bracelet is secured with screws. Being called “The Marine” isn’t without merit, as this case is water resistant to 100 meters. Case measures 42mm diameter by 12.5mm thick.
Dial is black and silver. There is a lot going on here. The center of the dial is black and with a swirling guilloche pattern. In fact, the dial is signed “SWISS GUILLOCHE MAIN” at the bottom. There is a brushed silver ring around the center with applied black roman numerals, at the bottom of which are the dual apertures that provide the Big Date display. Around the very edge of the dial is a black ring with silver diamond shaped hour markers with a luminous dot inside and also minutes markers. Hands are pomme style with luminous dots. The watch’s serial number is noted in a placard underneath 12 o’clock.
Movement is the automatic winding Breguet Caliber 517 GG with 35 jewels and beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour. This is an in-house manufacture movement. The gold winding rotor is decorated with the same guilloche pattern as on the dial.
Bracelet, still enshrouded in its never removed blue protective wrap, is rather massive and unlike most bracelets does not taper approaching the clasp. The Marine bracelet is very nice and has the same degree of superlative design and finishing as the watch. Bracelet is full length and will fit up to an 8.25 inch wrist.
