Description
Explorers, also known as the Explorer 1, feature one of my favorite dials of all-time. More than any other watch dial I can think of, the Explorer dial adheres to the form follows function rule. Black with luminous hour markers and hands, with inverted triangle at 12 o’clock and arabic ‘3’, ‘6’, and ‘9’ keep the wearer oriented to the dial at all times and from any angle. Case is no frills and does nothing more or less than keeping the dial and movement safe.

Original stainless steel case measures 36mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Sapphire is domed plastic. Steel case back screws down. Original screw down crown operating perfectly. Original smooth bezel. Case shows wear but is mint and minimally, if ever, polished.

Serial number 268XXX dates production to 1957.

Original untouched black gilt underline dial, as described above, also features chapter ring and original hands. Dial is mint and is taking on the chocolate brown tropical color that collectors prize. The underline was Rolex’s early way of denoting that the luminous on the dial was tritium as opposed to the earlier and it turns out dangerous radium.

Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 with 25 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions and to temperature. Movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.

Rolex rivered Oyster bracelet in stainless steel with 12 links and in near mint condition.

This early and beautiful Rolex Explorer 6610 is a rare and well preserved 55 year old wristwatch and will make a great addition to any Rolex collection.
