Description
Being in the vintage Rolex business, we have seen our share of 6538s. This watch exudes a special beauty. The dial has darkened and much of the print has turned red in color.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 15.8mm thick. Domed plastic crystal. Original screw down crown signed “BREVET” and working perfectly. Original bezel in clean condition. Bezel insert is a vintage Rolex replacement. Case body is in outstanding condition, easily mint.
Serial number 307XXX dates production to 1957. Inside case back is engraved “6538” and has date code of “I.57”.
Four-line black gilt dial has rail chapter and is signed “SWISS”. As mentioned, the dial has darkened with time and is truly beautiful. The text on the dial is original, but has turned red except for the “OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER” text. Original painted white seconds hand, which was produced very briefly and perhaps only in 1957. The hour and minute hands appear to be later replacements (perhaps at a service along with the bezel) but it’s difficult to be sure; they may be the original hands.
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 with 25 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions and to temperature. This C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer movement is in clean running condition.
Rolex riveted Oyster stretch bracelet with 11 links and date code 1-73. Condition is near mint.
This watch is in overall mint original Rolex condition. It’s beauty is not fully captured in the pictures. This is a rare and important vintage wristwatch.
