Description
The Rolex GMT Master is one of the legendary Rolex sport models, having been designed as a tool watch for commercial pilots. Being a Rolex, which is to say accurate and durable, the GMT Master was quickly adopted by military pilots and astronauts alike. The GMT Master allows the wearer to keep track of local time with the regular hour and minutes hands while the red 24 hour hand tracks GMT (now called UTC time) which pilots use as a universal reference time. The reference 6542 is the first GMT Master model that Rolex produced and is highly collectable.
Original stainless steel case measures 38mm diameter by 13mm thick and has no crown guards. The original bezel features the original Bakelite insert, which is extremely rare after 50+ years of service. Bezel turns freely. Crystal is acrylic with Cyclops date magnifier (the Cyclops magnifier was an option on 6542s). Original screw down crown operates smoothly. Case is in mint condition and the lugs are fat and even.
Serial number 397XXX dates production to 1958. Inside case back is engraved ‘6542’ and II.58 which shows that the watch left the factory in the second quarter of 1958.
Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1030 with 25 jewels and adjusted to five positions and temperature. This movement has the cool butterfly winding rotor. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer and is clean and running.
Dial is original very early service dial with gilt print and railtrack. Hands are very early service hands with correct small arrow red 24 hour hand. Dial and hands are genuine Rolex and in mint condition. Date aperture at 3 o’clock.
Strap is new custom suede with steel Rolex buckle.
This is an important vintage Rolex GMT with the extremely rare original Bakelite bezel insert and beautiful authentic and untouched gilt railtrack dial.
