Description
The Patek Philippe reference 3940 perpetual calendar was produced from 1985 through 2006. That is a mighty long time for a watch manufacture to produce a single reference, but the 3940 is no ordinary watch. The presentation of the calendar functions is without par for its balance and clarity. Add to that the dauphine hands, silver dial, applied hour markers and simple case lines and you have the perfect perpetual calendar.
First series dial is original and untouched. Applied golden hour markers, embossed minutes chapter and wonderful golden dauphine hands. Some characteristics of this dial are different from later dials (which were produced in a much larger quantity):
* the subdials are cut straight into the dial (and more deeply) and do not have the flanged sides that the subdials on all subsequent versions have
* the days and months font is printed on the main dial, versus on the flange of the subdials as seen on later dial versions
* the 24 hour subdial (at 9 o'clock) is shaded between '18' and '6' to indicate nighttime (although the darker color has faded somewhat)
* the 'SWISS' at the very bottom of the dial has the Sigma on both sides
Case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 35mm diameter by 8.5mm high. Case back is solid gold. First series 3940s did not have a sapphire display back. Case is in mint condition.
Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 240 Q with 27 jewels, 48 hour power reserve, 22k micro rotor, and stamped with the Geneva Seal. This is one of, if not the most, reliable perpetual calendar mechanisms ever produced by any manufacture.
