Description
This is one of those time capsule watches. Jerry B. Goldman purchased this watch from Berggren Jewelers in Sherman Oaks, California on May 20, 1977. Everything that Mr. Goldman received with the watch that day is here. Buy this watch and you’re taking a trip back in time to that day, plus you’ll be the proud owner of an interesting, rare and collectable vintage Rolex.
The reference 1630 is the rarer version of the all stainless steel reference 1530. Most of these 18k/steel watches have bracelets with two rows of gold in the bracelet, whereas this watch has three rows. This watch has never been polished, as evidenced by the crisp bevels on the edges of the case and bracelet.
Rolex collectors will recognize that this watch contains an automatic Rolex movement in the watch case and bracelet that Rolex utilized for its OysterQuartz Datejust watches. These reference 1530s and 1630s are rare and unusual and a collector’s treat.
Original stainless steel and 18k gold case is massive and has different proportions and a different shape from the tradition Oyster case. For instance, the case does not have lugs but rather an integral bracelet. For this reason, the model and serial numbers are engraved on the back of the case instead of between the lugs as is the case on a regular Oyster case. Dimensions are 42.6mm long by 36mm wide by 12mm thick. Solid 18k gold fluted bezel. Sapphire crystal.
Dial is silver but is taking on a champagne gold patina. Untouched and original, the dial has applied golden hour markers and baton hands. Date at 3 o’clock.
Movement is the deservedly legendary Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels, adjusted to temperature and in 5 positions, self-compensating Breguet balance spring and is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Movement is clean and running.
Bracelet is full-length and will fit up to an 8 inch wrist. Once again, the bracelet has 3 rows of gold in the links versus the normal 2 rows.
Watch is mint, unpolished, and with original box and papers.
