Description
Here is an extremely special vintage Rolex Oyster Cosmograph Daytona reference 6265 from very early in the model’s production with Mark 2 Paul Newman Ghost dial, and case with Mark 1 chronograph pushers. Serial number 2.85MM dates production to 1971.

Original stainless steel case has Mark 1 screw-down chronograph pushers and original screw-down crown. Original bezel with sharp edges and Units per Hour scale from ‘50’ to ‘200’. Domed plastic crystal in perfect condition. Lugs are very thick and crisp, as are the case edges, and it’s likely that this case has never been polished and remains in mint+ condition. Dimensions are 37mm diameter by 13.5mm thick.

Original untouched Mark 2 Paul Newman “Panda” two-color black and white dial in mint+ condition. The white is vivid white and the dial has a crisp step onto the contrasting black ring surrounding the dial with the luminous dots (all intact) and white minutes and seconds chapter. Contrasting black subdials are sunken and with concentric guilloche.

This watch is from 1971, and very early in the 6265’s production. The 6265/6263s were Rolex’s newest Daytona models at the time, and were improved over the previous Daytona model 6262 by the screw-down chronograph pushers which improved water resistance. Naturally, Rolex was keen to promote and market the improvement and did so by naming the 6265/6263s “OYSTER” Cosmograph (versus the earlier Cosmograph) witnessing the watch’s increased water resistance. The model 6262 also had the Paul Newman, or “Exotic” dial, and a handful of these super-early 6265s have a 6262 dial that Singer (the dial manufacturer), at Rolex’s request, removed the word Daytona from and inserted “OYSTER” between “ROLEX” and “COSMOGRAPH”. To put it mildly, these special dials and watches are extremely collectable.

Original Rolex manual winding Caliber 727 with 17 jewels and column wheel chronograph construction. Movement is clean and running and chronograph functions reset to zero.

Rolex riveted USA Oyster bracelet with 7-72 date code and light to moderate stretch and very clean.

This watch is guaranteed 100% original and authentic and is an important vintage Rolex and a fascinating example of how the brand iterated and improved its products over time. Condition is mint+.
