Description
In the next paragraph you will find information about the Patek Philippe 3940 perpetual calendar, which I believe is the greatest perpetual calendar watch ever. However, this is a model 3941 which is a genuine rarity. Whereas the later 3940s were offered with a skeleton back and solid back, the first couple of years of production came with only the solid case back. This reference 3941 was a special order watch with display back. This 3941 is entirely factory original and has the original untouched first-series dial coveted by collectors… but in gilt!

The Patek Philippe reference 3940 perpetual calendar was produced between 1985 through 2006. That is a mighty long time for a watch manufacture to produce a single reference, but the 3940 is no ordinary watch. The presentation of the calendar functions is without par for its balance and clarity. Add to that the dauphine hands, in this case a sublimely rare gilt champagne first series dial, applied hour markers and simple caselines and you have the perfect perpetual calendar.

The gilt dial on this 3941 is original, untouched and mint, and is a rare (and true) first series dial, produced only from 1985 to 1987. The characteristics of this dial which are different from the later dials (which were produced in a much larger quantity) are:

* on this gilt dial the subdials have a different (sparkly) texture from the main dial

* the subdials are cut straight into the dial (and more deeply) and do not have the flanged sides that the subdials on all subsequent versions have

* the days and months font is printed on the main dial, versus on the flange of the subdials as seen on later dial versions

* The second 'E' in "GENEVE" is accented

* the 'SWISS' at the very bottom of the dial has the Greek sigma character on either side

Case is 18k yellow gold with dimensions of 35mm diameter by 8.5mm high. Sapphire crystals front and display back. The case on this watch is mint.

Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 240 Q with 27 jewels, 48 hour power reserve, and stamped with the Geneva Seal. This is one of, if not the most, reliable perpetual calendar mechanisms ever produced by any manufacture.

Original Patek 18k yellow gold deplyant clasp and black Patek strap.

First series 3940s are very rare, and the 3941 is much rarer still… and the gilt champagne dial is extremely rare. Watch will be delivered with Patek winding box.
