Description
Word is that Patek has discontinued the 5960… and we all know what that means…!

This is definitely not your Dad's Calatrava; it is not even just a watch. The reference 5960 is a statement; a testament to Patek's heritage, a reflection of Patek's confidence in its leadership position in the industry, and a glimpse at the future, all in one spectacular wristwatch.

The movement in the 5960 is Patek Philippe's first automatic chronograph in their 167 year blue-ribbon history. It's also Patek's first flyback chronograph. And, due to the caliber's unique construction, the central chronograph seconds hand can be operated continuously (to serve as a conventional seconds hand) without harming the mechanism or adversely affecting accuracy.

The 5960 also features the first completely in-house chronograph caliber from Patek since the early 1980s. (In the interim years, all of Patek's chronograph calibers have been built from Nouvelle Lemania ebauches). Finally, this chronograph is the first to feature the 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph indicators in the same subdial. So clearly, Patek has innovated meaningfully with their new automatic winding Caliber CH28-520/521.

But we've only covered the chronograph so far...

This newest Patek Philippe masterpiece also provides an annual calendar, with the day, date and month displays arranged in an arc from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. Within the chronograph subdial there is a small aperture which displays a day/night indicator. To round out the complications, a power reserve indicator is located just underneath the date window.

I could stop here, and we'd all be convinced that this is an awesome watch. But the story would only be half told.

The Caliber CH28-520/521 is, once again, Patek's first ever automatic chronograph. Featuring column wheel construction, with 456 individual parts, the caliber also makes use of a massive 21k gold rotor, 40 jewels, 55 hour power reserve and is stamped with the new and highly prestigious Patek Philippe Seal.

Case is polished 950 platinum with a sapphire crystal front and back, with a diameter of 40.5mm. The 6 o'clock case side is set with a diamond. Chronograph pushers are pump style. Case back is screw down. While the watch is extremely refined and elegant, it is also more than a little sporty.

Dial is a magnificent blue with applied hour markers with adjacent luminous dots and luminous hands. The chronograph subdial is oversized, and accordingly very legible.

Strap is Patek Philippe crocodile with a platinum Patek Philippe deployant clasp.

Watch is indistinguishable from new with and complete with box and papers.
