Description
The Patek Philippe 3970 is a superlative, maybe THE superlative perpetual calendar chronograph from any manufacture ever. It is just right in every way, which helps explain why it is a must-have watch in every serious watch collection. I dare say that even if you are not a collector, but you have the intent and the means to own a true king of watchdom as a daily watch, the 3970 may be the best choice. The perpetual calendar provides day, date, month and moonphase while the chronograph lets you time events. I have seen so many watches, yet every time that I get to contemplate a 3970 I take an extra minute to admire its beauty.
This particular 3970 is an interesting transitional watch, between the second and third series of production. Furthermore, the dial on this watch is a second generation dial but with the leaf hands found in tandem with the first generation dial. This most interesting 3970 is complete with original Patek box and small-format papers, dated November 9, 1991.
The 18k yellow gold case is in mint plus condition with dimensions of 37mm diameter by 13.5mm thick. Domed sapphire front crystal and flat sapphire display back crystal. Pump style chronograph pushers. The lug steps are undiminished and the hallmarks on the side of the case are the deepest we have seen. Watch also has second (solid) case back.
Dial is light silver, almost white, with applied golden baton markers and leaf hands. The following information is presented on the dial: 3 o'clock subdial shows leap year cycle and 30 minute chronograph totalizer; 6 o'clock subdial shows moonphase and date; 9 o'clock subdial shows constant seconds and 24 hour time. Day and month are displayed in the apertures above the "PATEK PHILIPPE GENEVE" text.
Movement is the manual winding Caliber 27-70Q with 24 jewels, adjusted for hot and cold, and bearing the Geneva Seal. The chronograph features column wheel construction.
Strap is a Patek crocodile with 18k Patek tang clasp.
