Description
The Rolex Cosmograph reference 6238 is a so called “Pre Daytona”, and has a simple elegance that was lost to the more sporty appearance of the Daytona models. This chronograph is totally original and its production dates to 1964. The silver dial, like the watch, is versatile enough to be worn with everything from a suit to shorts and a tee shirt.
The 6238 is visually different from the later Daytona in a couple of compelling ways. First, the bezel is a smooth bezel whereas the Daytonas have the bezel with engraved Units per Hour scale. The Daytona dials have contrasting color subdials, whereas the 6238 dial is uniform silver throughout. Also, on the 6238 the tachometer scale (same as the Units per Hour scale) is on the dial instead of the bezel.
Original stainless steel case measures 37mm diameter by 13.4mm thick. Crystal is plastic. Screw down crown is original and is operating smoothly. Round pump style chronograph pushers are original and are operating perfectly. Case condition is mint+.
Original silver dial with non-contrasting silver subdials and tachometer scale. Dial is in mint condition and with original hands.
Original movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 72B with 17 jewels and column wheel construction. Movement is very clean and running well. All chronograph functions return to their respective zero positions perfectly. Inside case back is stamped ‘6238’. Serial number 1101XXX dates production of the watch to 1964.
Watch is on a new custom rustic leather strap with Rolex buckle.
