Description
There are watches, there are complicated watches, there are grand complications, and then there is this total ass-kicking GGM 1 Grande Complication from Gerald Genta in 6-sided titanium case. Watch is in new condition with box and papers.

Case is classic Genta, but even more exaggerated than usual. First of all, it is titanium which is known to be an excellent, if under-utilized, case metal for a minute repeater, as the titanium is outstanding at propagating sound waves. Six-sided and with 8 tapering tiers including the case back, the finish is matte all around. Crowns and push buttons are domed and with beaded bottoms. Lugs curve downward and are screwed onto the case. Case dimensions are 41mm across and 15.8mm thick. Crystals are sapphire and case back is secured by bolts.

Mother of pearl with guilloche dial has all of the playful touches we expect from Gerald Genta including retrograde hours and a window for minutes wheel. The dial also has the crest of Prince Jefri who is the brother of the Sultan of Brunei and a renowned collector of high-end luxury good. Each hour position has a luminous dot adjacent and the hour hand has inlaid luminous. All hands are arrow style. The scales on the right side of the dial are for engaging or silencing the sonnerie and indicating grand or petite (named “Little” on dial) mode. There is also a power reserve indicator.

Before we get to the movement, for those perhaps newer to complicated watches, the difference between a sonnerie and a minute repeater is that a sonnerie sounds the time automatically and must store up power continuously to perform this function, whereas a minute repeater has an activation slide/lever which starts the hammer and gongs for sounding out the time, so the function is engaged only when the wearer pulls the lever.

The automatic movement is a work of art both horologically and visually. Featuring a grapes motif, with both the grapes and grape leaves, along with extensive hand decoration. Horologically speaking, the movement is overwhelming in its mastery. First, minute repeating watches are almost always manual winding, while this sonnerie movement is automatic winding. The wearer can choose between Grande or Petite Sonnerie modes, with Westminster chime, four gongs and four hammers. Genta also includes a tourbillon into this beast, which has 57 jewels and is stamped with the Geneva Seal.

Hand-sewn new Genta strap with folding deployment clasp.

Watch is new with box and papers. The retail price of this watch is $1,400,000.
