Description
Right off the bat: this is the only 5056 prototype to ever leave the factory and is in all likelihood the only 5056 prototype, period. How does one recognize that it is a prototype? “PROTOYPE” is printed on the dial below “PATEK PHILIPPE” where a normal 5056 would have “GENEVE”. The dial on this 5056 is also significantly different from the production dials: printed Arabic numerals on this dial versus applied romans on production dials and this dial has an all-white power reserve scale whereas the production dials have red when the power reserve hands declines below ‘12’.
The reference 5056 is an annual calendar with a power reserve and moonphase display. The dial on this watch is matte grey, which is another difference between this dial and the production dials, which have a metallic finish. The dial is very balanced, with a power reserve display at 12 o'clock, date window at 6 o'clock, day subdial at 10 o'clock, month subdial at 2 o'clock, and with a moonphase display underneath the subdials.
Case is platinum with 37mm diameter and 11mm thick. Domed sapphire crystal with flat sapphire display back crystal. Patek Philippe buckle in 950 platinum.
Patek Philippe automatic caliber 315/199 features 37 jewels, 48 hour power reserve and 21k rose gold winding rotor. Beautifully and tastefully finished, the movement is stamped with the Geneva Seal.
