Description
The reference 1655, the so called “Steve McQueen”, “Freccione” and “Orange Hand”, is the first Explorer II. The early watches, of which this is an example, have a straight (no dot on it) seconds hand and are much rarer than the later examples. In fact, this watch was made in 1971, the first year that the reference 1655 was produced. It’s unusual to find a complete 1655, but this watch is accompanied by Rolex box and double punched papers.

Stainless steel case measures 38mm in diameter by 13.5mm thick. Case features a plastic crystal, screw down crown (operating as it should) and original bezel with engraved 24 hour scale. Serial number 2764XXX dates production to 1971 and the inside case back is stamped II.71 for second quarter 1971 production.

Original untouched black dial with uniform patina on the markers and original hands. Again, this early 1655 has the straight seconds hand. Date window at 3 o’clock.

Movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1570 with 26 jewels and adjusted to 5 positions and temperature. This movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.

Bracelet is the original Rolex folded Oyster with date code of April 1972.

Watch is in mint condition and complete.
