Description
We get to see thousands of vintage watches each year, and a few hundred of the most special pieces make it into our inventory. While we have offered many vintage watches much more expensive than this one, this Vacheron Constantin is a favorite of mine.
Let me add quickly that a prominent vintage watch dealer had this same watch with the same dial, with a serial number only four numbers apart from this one, which he was asking $12,500 which is now sold.
Rolex made the reference 1625 Datejust, which we believe Vacheron Constantin based this watch’s styling on. Both watches share the same rotatating timing bezel and overall appearance. The Rolex is known as both the Thunderbird and Turn-O-Graph, and the Vacheron is also called both.
Case is 18k gold with dimensions of 36.6mm in diameter by 12mm thick. The bezel turns in both directions, and is engraved with "15" "30" "45" at the respective positions and diamond shaped markers at the other 5 minute positions. The crystal has a magnifying lens over the date, a la the Rolex Datejust version. Crown is not original but works perfectly. Case back is a massive 18k screw back.
This model watch is very rare, but this dial is seriously rare. Gold dial is signed Vacheron Constantin Geneve Automatic, and has a unique pattern of small squares, each of which has radial starburst engraving. Date at 3 o’clock.
Automatic winding Vacheron Constantin Caliber K1072 with 29 jewels, adjusted to heat, cold, isochronism and in 5 positions. Winding rotor has large 18k segment to increase mass and winding efficiency.
Watch is on new Italian brown suede strap. This is a rare treasure with more than its share of mystique and charm.
