Description
Here is a beauty of a vintage chronograph from one of watchdom’s most successful brands: Movado. In the 1940s, watch firms all bought their movements from Lemania or Valjoux and all chronograph calibers were built with column wheel construction. The column wheel construction is expensive to build, but does a far better job of switching the chronograph on and off. Now the vast majority of chronographs use a chronograph module attached to a regular movement to reduce costs.
This unpolished 1940s solid gold Movado chronograph is a superb example of days gone by, when quality mattered more than profits.
Case features faceted lugs, stepped bezel and screw back. You can tell when a watch company makes a watch that is important to them: they use a threaded screw-down case back to protect the movement inside. This is something only companies like Patek, Rolex and Movado took the care to do. Movado even took it a step further with an inner dust cover, which also shields the movement from magnetism. Diameter is 35mm diameter by 12mm thick. Domed acrylic crystal. Round pump-style chronograph pushers.
Original silver dial which has developed a champagne patina with applied golden arabic numerals and indices and original golden hands with inlaid luminous. Outer seconds chapter. Three subdials: running seconds, chronograph 30 minute and 12 hour totalizers. Original chronograph seconds hand is blued and minutes totalizer hand is red.
Original, clean and running caliber 95M movement with 17 jewels, Breguet balance spring and column wheel construction. Movement is signed “MOVADO FACTORIES” which is cool.
New Movado leather strap with gold tone buckle.
