Description
The Rolex reference 6238 chronograph is a so called “Pre Daytona”, and has a simple elegance that was lost to the more sporty appearance of the Daytona models. This chronograph dates to 1964. The black dial is a big deal. There are lots and lots and lots of silver dial 6238s for every original black dial 6238. You are looking at one of Rolex collectors' biggest targets, and it won’t last!
Never polished stainless steel case measures 36mm diameter by 13.5mm thick. Smooth bezel imparts a clean look. The later Daytona bezel has the engraved Units per Hour scale. Crystal is plastic. Screw down crown is original and is operating smoothly. Round pump style chronograph pushers are original and are operating perfectly. Case condition is mint+.
Rare black dial is original and with non-contrasting color subdials, which is another big difference from the Daytona with its contrasting color subdials. Dial is in mint+ condition and the luminous dots were professionally restored by Rolex, while the rest of the dial is untouched.
Movement is the manual winding Rolex Caliber 72B with 17 jewels and column wheel construction. Movement is clean and running. All chronograph functions return to their respective zero positions perfectly. Inside case back is stamped ‘6238’. Serial number 1105XXX dates production of the watch to 1964.
Watch is on Rolex riveted stretch Oyster bracelet in mint+ condition.
