Description
The 5960 will go down as an important Patek Philippe watch for many reasons. Patek has produced the watch in numerous metals and with numerous dial colors. This platinum version with black dial is by the far the most elegant and attractive. They saved the best for last!

Where do I even begin in describing the 5960 annual calendar chronograph? Let's start with history: this is Patek Philippe's first automatic chronograph in their 175 year blue-ribbon history. It's also Patek's first flyback chronograph. And, due to the caliber's unique construction, the central chronograph seconds hand can be operated continuously (to serve as a conventional seconds hand) without harming the mechanism or adversely affecting accuracy.

The reference 5960 also features the first completely in-house chronograph caliber from Patek since the early 1980s. (In the interim years, all of Patek's chronograph calibers have been built from Nouvelle Lemania ebauches). Finally, this chronograph is the first to feature the 30 minute and 12 hour chronograph indicators in the same subdial. So clearly, Patek has innovated meaningfully with their new automatic winding Caliber CH28-520. But we've only covered the chronograph so far...

This Patek masterpiece also provides an annual calendar, with the day, date and month displays arranged in an arc from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock. Within the chronograph subdial there is a small aperture which displays a day/night indicator. To round out the complications, a power reserve indicator is located just underneath the date window.
I could stop here, and we'd all be convinced that this is an awesome watch. But the story would only be half told.

The Caliber CH28-520 is, once again, Patek's first ever automatic chronograph. Featuring column wheel construction, the caliber also makes use of a massive 21k gold rotor, has 40 jewels, 55 hour power reserve and is stamped with the Patek Philippe Seal.

Case is platinum with a sapphire crystal front and back, with a diameter of 40.5mm. The 6 o'clock case side is set with a diamond. Chronograph pushers are pump style. Case back is screw down.

Dial is an elegant black with applied hour markers with adjacent luminous dots and luminous hands. The chronograph subdial is oversized, and accordingly very legible. This 5960 dial is the only 5960 which does not have a contrasting color chronograph chapter.

Strap is hand sewn crocodile with a platinum Patek Philippe deployant clasp. Watch is indiscernible from new with box and papers.
