When Richard Mille left Mauboussin to start his eponymous brand in the late 1990s, he held one core value the dearest: not to compromise on his vision, not to compromise on the translation of that vision into his watches, and not to compromise on quality.
Richard Mille watches look unlike any other watch. More importantly, Richard Mille watches are made unlike any other watch. Mr. Mille started from scratch, in how he thought about watches. The construction, the materials, the design… his brand represents a revolution in how a watch is built.
Needless, to say, Mr. Mille succeeded. It wasn’t a sure thing, when he brought the first and only RM01 to the Basel Fair in 2000. Success was anything but certain. However, one thing I have learned is that quality sells and when quality is matched with vision, a superstar is born.
Here is a rare Richard Mille watch, the RM016 in 18k rose gold with diamond case. The company calls this watch “Extra Flat”. Case dimensions are 50mm long by 38mm wide by 8mm thick. Top of the case is completely inset with diamonds. The case’s construction entails 202 separate steps. Sapphire crystals front and display back.
Skeletonized front of the watch has large arabic numbers, rose gold hands and a date window at 7 o’clock. The view permits a good look at the date wheel with its black numbers and the front of the movement. The signature Mille case bolts are repeated in the movement, all of which play a structural role in their respective positions.
Automatic winding Richard Mille Caliber made of grade 5 titanium with black PVD coating. The caliber also makes use of grade 2 titanium and passladium as well as ceramics. Double barrel system to optimize torque stability over the longest possible time. My favorite innovation from RM is the variable geometry rotor. While there is a lot of science behind it, the basic idea is that the rotor spins rapidly with leisurely arm movements while spinning slowly with rapid/forceful arm movements.
