Description
The Rolex reference 6238 chronograph is a so called “Pre-Daytona”, and has a simple elegance that was lost to the more sporty appearance of the Daytona models. This chronograph dates to 1965. The black dial is a big deal. There is a multitude of silver dial 6238s for every original black dial 6238. You are looking at one of Rolex collecting’s biggest targets, and it won’t last!
Stainless steel case measures 36mm diameter by 13.5mm thick. Crystal is plastic. Screw down crown is original and is operating smoothly. Round pump style chronograph pushers are original and are operating perfectly. Case condition is mint+.
Ultra rare and collectable black dial is original and untouched with sunken subdials, applied indices and original hands – all in mint condition. All dial printing is gilt. The best part: the color has aged and mellowed into a deep chocolate brown which is gorgeous.
Movement is a 17 jewel manual winding Rolex caliber with column wheel construction. Movement is clean and running. All chronograph functions return to their respective zero positions perfectly. Inside case back is stamped ‘6238’. Serial number 1226XXX dates production of the watch to 1965.
Watch is on a vintage oval folded link Rolex Jubilee bracelet.
