Description
The Rolex Daytona model 6240 is the rarest and most collectable Daytona of them all. The 6240 introduced the screw down chronograph pushers and with it, the OYSTER designation for Daytonas. Its production was concurrent with several non-screw down pusher models, and the model was produced in scant numbers. This watch features an extremely rare, important and interesting Paul Newman dial.
Original stainless steel case is 37mm diameter by 14mm thick, with black bezel with Units per Hour scale, domed plastic crystal, screw down crown and screw down chronograph pushers. Case is clean and mint. Serial number 1659XXX dates production to 1967. Inside case back is marked ‘6240’.
Original, untouched, clean and mint RARE Mark 1 high Swiss Alps “T SWISS T” black three color Paul Newman dial. Note that the dial does not have the word “OYSTER” on it, which is what makes it so rare on an Oyster Daytona model (by definition, a Daytona with screw down chronograph pushers). Namely, this is the first generation Paul Newman (or “Exotic”) dial, as it is also observed on the non-screw down chronograph pusher model 6239 from this same 1.6M serial number production. In other words, the non-Oyster model 6239 and this Oyster model 6240 share the same dial, an overlap that occurred on ONLY 5 KNOWN 6240s. Subsequent model 6240 Paul Newman and non-Paul Newman dials have “Oyster” on them. The T SWISS T on this dial is the high “Swiss Alps” version, where the ‘WIS’ in the middle of “SWISS” form what resembles a mountain’s peak.
