Description
One of Patek’s most important watches, the reference 1463 vintage chronograph is a sporty chronograph from an era of dress chronographs. This new old stock stainless steel 1463 is, by far, the nicest 1463 we have ever seen. The condition leaves one speechless. It is as if this watch was transported from 1945 to 2016.
The 1463 was made between 1940 and circa 1965, with a total production of approximately 720 watches. The vast majority of the production was in 18k. In fact, around 180 watches have been documented in stainless steel, which were produced between 1941 and 1960. Of these 180 made, considerably fewer than half have been offered for sale in any market, with the remainder lost or permanently retired in collections.
Original and rare stainless steel case with screw back with dimensions of 35mm diameter by 13mm thick. The 1463 cases were made by Francois Borgel (later Taubert Freres) for Patek, and the inside case back shows the case maker’s hallmark. The firm’s specialty was water proof cases of the highest quality. From lug tip to lug tip, this watch measures 43mm. The 1463 was Patek’s first chronograph to implement the screw back, so as to achieve increased water resistance. The profile of the case is interesting and very well executed. Chronograph pushers have a sunburst pattern engraved that compliments the fluted edges of the original winding crown. Lugs turn downward and crystal is domed acrylic.
Original untouched two-tone silver dial features applied indices along with applied ‘12’ and ‘6’, seconds and 1/5ths of a second chapter and tachymeter scale, sunken subdials (for seconds and chronograph 30 minute totalizer), blued chronograph hands and baton style hour and minute hands. The dial and hands are 100% original, untouched and clean.
Movement is the manual winding Patek Philippe chronograph Caliber 13-130 with 23 jewels, column wheel construction, and adjusted to 8 positions. Movement is pristine and running.
