Description
This is an interesting watch. Rolex mixed up a lot of quirky ingredients to bring this watch together. First of all, hardly any model 16078s were made, and they were in the first generation of Datejust models to have a sapphire crystal. This model is also in its unmolested original state with original bark finish bezel and Jubilee bracelet with bark center links.
Look at this dial: very unusual combination of Houndstooth print, diamond hour markers with partial luminous plots touching the diamonds on the outside edge and with small applied golden roman numerals next to each marker toward the inside of the dial. Dials this eccentric were normally reserved for Day Date President watches.
18k gold 36mm Datejust case with sapphire crystal with screw down crown. Serial number 5385XXX dates production to 1978. I can totally see this watch on someone’s wrist in Studio 54!
Rolex automatic winding Caliber 3035 with 27 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions and to temperature. Movement is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer. Movement is clean and running.
