Description
F.P. Journe has raised the bar for chronographs with the Centigraphe Souverain. This remarkable chronograph measures time intervals down to 1/100th of a second, hence the name Centigraphe. What’s most remarkable to me, personally, is how this chronograph re-distributes our concept of time per the indicators on its dial.

This model in aluminum was made very briefly before being discontinued. The watch is so light it is shocking. Not surprisingly, the watch is extremely comfortable to wear.

By the way, the Centigraphe is the lowest production watch in the already low, hand-made Journe production.

If you are a chronograph fan like I am, you are accustomed to chronographs having totalizer subdials that measure time intervals in one subdial up to 30 minutes and in another subdial up to 12 hours.

Now, along comes the Centigraphe, and we (joyously) have to adjust to watching time elapse in a different manner. First of all, this chronograph makes use of the foudroyante display in the upper left subdial, which is the 1/100th of a second subdial. Foudroyante means that the hand spins rapidly and continuously, and makes one rotation of its subdial each second. When the chronograph is stopped, the wearer can read the time in this indicator with its 1/100th of a second scale. The subdial in the upper right part of the dial measures time in a 20 second interval, meaning its hand makes one full rotation every 20 seconds. The subdial at the bottom of the dial totalizes the elapsed time from when the chronograph is started up to 10 minutes. Unlike other chronographs, all three chronograph hands are in constant motion… and, incredibly, watching this system will change your perception of time.

The white subdials for the Centigraphe system have red scales, which look great, and all three are made contiguous by an aluminum plate attached to the dial with 9 screws. The dial itself is gray, aluminum and with arabic numerals and minutes/seconds chapter.

Case is aluminum with dimensions of 40.5mm diameter by 11mm thick. Crystals front and display back are sapphire. The crown is knurled and signed with F.P. Journe’s simple signature of two dots. The chronograph is activated, stopped and reset to its zero positions with the switch mechanism at the 2 o’clock position on the case side.

The movement is also aluminum and is hand winding and has 50 jewels and is completely hand assembled, hand decorated, hand finished and hand adjusted. Power reserve is an amazing 80 hours.

Aluminum integral bracelet with double-folding clasp.

Watch is in new condition with box and papers.
