Description

I’m going to let the designer of this watch – Gerald Genta – be the star of this story. You see, Mr. Genta is the most famous watch designer in history. He designed the Nautilus, which is the most iconic luxury sports watch ever. Mr. Genta also passed away not all that long ago at the age of 80. So, we present this mint condition, all original, Patek Philippe Nautilus “Jumbo” reference 3700/1 in 18k gold in memory of Gerald Genta. Patek introduced the Nautilus as a sports watch to fill a void in their model line in 1976. This is a first series, original nautilus in the full size case measuring 41.2mm wide by 44.3mm long by 7.2mm thick. Sapphire crystal. The case is water resistant to 120 meters (but please think twice before bringing such an important vintage watch into the water...). The Nautilus bezel is unique and defines the Nautilus aesthetically. Both the bracelet and case are very clean and in mint condition. Solid 18k gold bracelet is integral to the case and has a flip lock safety clasp. Interestingly, Patek uses 18k white gold for the folding part of the clasp. Just as a reminder, this is a 3700/1 Nautilus and not the later 3700/11. This watch has a thick gold bracelet, versus the 3700/11 which has a significantly thinner and lighter 18k bracelet. This is a massive watch and heavy gold bracelet (which is a very good thing). Dial is untouched and original, with horizontal channeling, applied hour markers with luminous, and the date at 3 o'clock. The color of the dial is somewhere between grey, dark blue and black. Its color is complemented beautifully by the gold case. Movement is the automatic winding Patek Philippe Caliber 28 255C with 36 jewels, adjusted to 5 positions and heat/cold, and stamped with the Geneva Seal. The movement features a free-sprung balance and an 18k rotor segment for increased winding efficiency. At the time of its production, the 28-255C was the thinnest automatic winding movement ever made. This is an important vintage Patek Philippe wristwatch. It is also a beautiful object. This, I think, is the best compliment a designer can receive.
