Description

Piaget was founded in 1874, but they did not open their first showroom until 1959 on the rue du Rhone in Geneva. Unlike all of their other “jewelry” watch brands, Piaget always took their watchmaking seriously, and never saw watches as, simply, a brand extension. This can be seen in how thin their watch movements and cases are, which is a point of pride with Swiss watchmakers. In fact, Piaget garnered the honor of being called The Jeweler of Watchmaking in the 1970s, when this watch was made. Piaget took both the mechanical aspect of watch making seriously, and they also took the design aspect seriously. Piaget’s 1970’s watches made use of enamel dials, lapis lazuli dials, feather dials and other stones and materials. This watch features a brown dial with Tiger’s Eye sections, including the two square subdials for each of the time zones this watch independently displays. Each subdial has roman numerals and the dial is signed, simply’ PIAGET and SWISS. Case is 18k white gold and is 34mm diameter by 7.8mm thin, with sapphire crystal and a setting and winding crown at both the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock positions, for the two manual winding movements inside. Case back has personalized engraving dated May 13, 1975. Movements are Piaget in-house Caliber 6P1 with 17 jewels. Both are clean and running. Bracelet is original 18k white gold mesh with signed clasp and total wearable length of 7 3/8th inches (18.7 cms). Watch is in mint+ condition and is an important wristwatch from an important brand.
