Description
Here is one of those rare museum quality wristwatches, where everything is the most desirable and in the best all-original condition. This is a spectacular vintage GMT and will make its next owner very happy indeed.
There are some similar, but not exactly matching watches, only a few serial numbers apart from this watch featured in the pages of the Mondani/Ravagnani ROLEX GMT-MASTER book. The authors say about the underline dial “Again a GMT-MASTER with ref. 1675, where it is possible to admire a dial, which considering the year of production, could be a prototype.”
In fact, this original untouched railtrack dial has several unusual characteristics along with its already desirable gilt writing. First, the underline beneath OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED was Rolex’s code to show that the luminous used on the dial was not radioactive. The luminous hour markers are larger than normal and located slightly more to the center of the dial. Also, there is a hyphen (-) between OYSTER and PERPETUAL whereas on a watch just a handful of serial numbers earlier, there is neither a hyphen nor a railtrack. Hands are original and mint, as is the dial.
We can see that this very watch is from the period early in 1675 production, during which Rolex was actively experimenting with different dials and cases.
Unpolished stainless steel case with transitional crown guards that are neither pointed nor have the later block shape. Original bezel turning as it should, faded red and blue bezel insert, and plastic crystal. Original screw down crown operating as it should. Dimensions are 40mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Serial number 874XXX dates watch to 1962. Date code on inside case back is I.63.
Original automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1560 with 25 jewels and adjusted to temperature and in 5 positions. Movement is clean and running and is a C.O.S.C. Certified Chronometer.
Original riveted Rolex Oyster bracelet mint condition with “2 63” date code.
This vintage Rolex GMT Master 1675 with transitional case and prototype dial is a museum-quality collector’s piece.
