This is really and trult a treasure of a vintage Submariner. The dial is a jolt to the pleasure center of the Rolex collector’s brain. Totally original GILT GLOSS 4 LINE EXCLAMATION CHAPTER RING dial – and yes, these words belong in capital letters. No crown guards case. It literally doesn’t get better than this!
Original no crown guards “James Bond” steel case is 38mm diameter by 12.5mm thick. Domed plastic crystal. Screw down crown. Original bezel and bezel insert. Case is overall mint with crisp bevels in the lugs. Serial number 763XXX dates production to 1961/62 and inside case back has ‘5508’ and ‘II.62’ date code.
I won’t use capital letters any further, but this gilt/gloss/exclamation/4 line/chapter ring dial is literally as nice as a vintage Submariner dial can possibly be. The early 1960s was a transitional period with Rolex and their dials. It is believed that the luminous dot beneath the 6 o’clock marker designated that the luminous used was less radioactive than previously, hence forming the ‘!’ form for the marker and the name “exclamation dial”. Furthermore, there is both gilt and white print used on this 4 line dial, a rarity as compared to the much more frequently seen 2 line dial.
Original movement is the automatic winding Rolex Caliber 1560 with 26 jewels and adjusted in 5 positions and to temperature. Movement is clean and running.
Bracelet is riveted Oyster with ‘7-71’ date code.
Watch is in mint condition and is an incredible vintage Rolex Submariner.
